Programs Overview

SBU offers several ways that a child can get involved in the sport of water polo:

  • 5-8 year-olds typically start out with our Splashball program, yet they must be able to swim the entire length of the pool by themselves.
  • 9-18 year-olds can join one of our competitive water polo teams (based on their age*).

*Water polo age is determined by age as of August 1st, 2024.

SBU runs year-round (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer quarters). The water polo year begins on September 1 and culminates with the USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics in August.

Splashball (Intro to Water Polo)

No experience needed, introduction to water polo

Splashball is a water polo program designed specifically for children, usually between the ages of five and nine years old. It serves as an introduction to the sport of water polo, with a focus on building basic water skills and introducing fundamental aspects of the game in a fun and safe environment. The primary goal of Splashball is to familiarize young kids with water polo concepts while promoting a love for swimming and water activities.

Before enrolling a child in Splashball, make sure they are comfortable in the water and have some basic swimming skills. They should be able to swim 25-meters and be comfortable getting in and out of the pool independently. While Splashball is an introductory program, having a foundation in swimming helps kids feel more confident and enjoy the experience.

This program runs year-round.
